Fire services from across Roscommon and Mayo have been battling a number of blazes in the Gorthaganny area this week.

The town yesterday successfully hosted the finish of a stage of Rás Tailteann, the international cycling event.

He passed away peacefully this morning after an illness, while aged in his late 70s.

Sources say the alliance that controls the local authority is set to back him.

Around 145 cyclists from Ireland, the UK, Mexico, Germany, and other countries will take part.  

Cuain Bride in Fourmilehouse in Co Roscommon is getting half a million - allowing them to cater for an extra 36 kids.

It follows the outbreak of a major fire in Gortaganny yesterday afternoon which then spread to a significant area.

Leitrim Fire Service is at the scene, trying to bring it under control.
