Roscommon's chief fire officer says an increasing wind has posed a significant challenge in tackling fires in the west of the county.
It follows the outbreak of a major fire in Gortaganny yesterday afternoon which then spread to a significant area.
A number of local roads have now been closed and residents are being urged to stay indoors.
Fire-fighting helicopters remain in the area this afternoon as they work to douse forestry and surrounding bogland.
