Carrick-on-Shannon fire brigade spent hours battling the inferno but, by midnight, it was entirely extinguished. 

The government has said the scheme is in the process of being extended to all primary schools.

Lough Funshinagh, a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Turlough, has experienced increasingly severe flooding in recent years- resulting in record water levels and significant impacts on local communities.

The popular event drew large crowds to Lough Key Forest Park and surrounding areas in September.

The 2km path will be built along the local road that links the two villages.

The move is aimed at speeding up the delivery of homes in rural towns and villages, but concerns are being raised about standards.

Leitrim County Council has agreed to rent three houses to Leitrim Development Company for the project.

Roscommon County Council says the incident is currently under investigation by its environment department.
