Roscommon council defends charge for paint tins disposal

Roscommon County Council stands to lose 40 thousand euro if a charge isn't introduced for the disposal of paint tins at civic amenity sites.

Roscommon County Council stands to lose 40 thousand euro if a charge isn't introduced for the disposal of paint tins at civic amenity sites.

The executive have decided to introduce a specific charge of €3.50 per 3 tins of paint that are being disposed.

It's in response to a tripling of costs associated with dealing with the items and the unprecendented increase in DIY waste since the lockdown earlier this year.

Concerns were voiced that the move would drive people towards illegal dumping instead of encouraging them to use these facilities.

Senior executive Officer Pat Murtagh says the alternative would be to stop providing the disposal service as other local councils have done, including Longford and Leitrim.
