Public asked to pay respects to late St Bernard Lynch in safe manner

Gardaí in Athlone say they hope everyone who wants to pay their last respects to Sr Bernard Lynch will be able to do so in a safe manner this morning.

Covid-19 restrictions mean that only a small number of people are allowed at the funeral but a procession route has been arranged from Flynn's Funeral Home to St Peter and Paul's Church where people can stand out.

A notice on the parish website says they are encouraging people who want to pay their respects to pick a spot along the route and applaud if they want to.

The Arigna born nun who was in her 90's died on Tuesday afternoon after she became ill while driving a car near the Golden Island Shopping Centre.

Sgt Andrew Haran says they are very aware that a lot of people will want to pay their respects and having a funeral procession should allow people to safely distance.
