Motorists are advised to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on any journeys.

Head of Communications with the RSA Brian Farrell says anyone travelling today should expect the unexpected.

The country is under a yellow snow and ice warning until 11 o' clock tonight.

Met Eireann is warning of accumulations of snow in many areas along with icy conditions.

Hazardous driving conditions, travel disruption and poor visibility can also be expected.

Alan O' Reilly of Carlow Weather said there will be heavy wintry showers throughout the day across the country.
