A Romanian national, only in the country a matter of weeks, has appeared at a special court sitting in Longford charged with the alleged theft of over €500 worth of electrical items from a supermarket earlier today.
Marius Catalin Tudorache (18), Mountain View House, Hempstown, Blessington, Wicklow, was brought before Judge Deirdre Gearty this evening following an alleged incident at Tesco's, Longford Shopping Centre shortly before 1pm today.
The court heard Gardai had been called to the store at 12:40pm after a male was spotted putting "several items" into a foil lined back pack before attempting to leave the premises on foot.
Security personnel stopped the man just outside the store and he was arrested and brought to Longford Garda Station for questioning where he was later charged with the alleged theft of €511 of electrical items, the possession of a foil lined backpack with the intention to commit theft, and of breaching Level 5 Covid-19 travel regulations.
The court was told the alleged items taken included electrical toothbrushes, a computer game and mobile phone, all of which were recovered.
The accused made no reply when the three charges were read out to him but did state the the foil lined backpack was his property.
Mr Tudorache was remanded in custody and is to appear at Harristown District Court on Friday at 10:30am.
