Concern has been expressed by Longford Councillors that the current system of adding people to the Register of Electors could be open to fraud.

The draft register will be published on November 1st, with people who wish to be added asked to email or use the online form to check their franchise.

This month's meeting of the local authority heard claims that in one estate in Longford town, people who have not lived at an address for 20 years are still on the register.

It was also claimed that two people who wished to vote in this year's General Election in south Longford were not able to do so as their names had been removed from the register without their knowledge.

Councillors agreed to write to the Minister to ask for additional resources for the local authority to be able to check, confirm and verify the register.

Councillor Mark Casey believes that a huge focus is put on the election process, but less on the register itself.
