Local TD says new policies on death registration could avoid 'hurt'

The government is planing to move the registration process for births and deaths online

Roscommon Deputy Denis Naughten says he wants to see the government introduce a new policy on death notice registration.

The Independent TD who's Chair of the Oireachtas Social Protection Committee says proposals to move birth and death registrations online offer an opportunity for the government to save families the heartache and difficulty of information several agencies about the death of a loved one.

Under the Civil Registration Bill 2023, the government is proposing an online process for registering births and deaths.

It's due to be introduced as an alternative option where someone has to attend a local office to register.

Deputy Naughten says unnecessary hurt is still caused to people because of the present system and the Committee is recommending changes to avoid that.
