A public health expert has downplayed the infection risks posed by a large gathering at a funeral in Leitrim yesterday.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral of a member of the Travelling Community in Carrick-on-Shannon yesterday afternoon in contravention of current covid-19 health restrictions.
Dr Anthony Staines, a Professor of Health Systems with DCU, says while groups should not be gathering at all, gatherings outside pose less of a risk transmitting the virus.
A policing plan was put in place and Gardai monitored the situation throughout the afternoon, with no public order breaches reported.
