People who breach Covid-19 travel restrictions for non-essential purposes will be fined 100 euro from today.

It'll be issued by Gardaí to anyone who refuses a request to turn back.

The latest developments come under changes made to The Health Act 1947 (Section 31A-Temporary Restrictions) (Covid-19) (No.10) Regulations 2020 in accordance with the Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) Act, 2020 are currently in force.

Regulation 4 states ‘an applicable person shall not leave his or her place of residence without reasonable excuse’. This is a Penal Regulation and is enforceable.

The fixed charge penalty notice will arrive in the post and a person will have 28 days to pay it.

Gardaí say it'll also no longer consult with the Director of Public Prosecutions before issuing these fines.
