The development of a new distillery in Ahascragh in east Galway is expected to create over 100 new jobs.

Dublin couple Michelle and Gareth McAllister are renovating of the old Ahascragh Mill for an eco-distillery, powered by renewable energy, with a drive to be carbon neutral.

The McAllisters are already producing 'Clan Colla' Irish Whiskey and 'Xin Gin' which as well as being sold in Ireland, will be pitched for the Asian market.

The project will immediately employ over 30 people in construction and the distillery will have 20 direct jobs within three years; it will also support a further 60-70 indirect jobs through local supply chains.

Works are completed on The Old Mill Shop & Café, which will open next week.

Michelle McAllister says they spotted the property online while in Hong Kong but knew it would be perfect for their businesses when they visited the town.
