Castlerea Garda murder accused still unfit to appear in court

Gardai investigating the murder of colleague Det. Garda Colm Horkan expect progress in the case in the near future, a court has been told.

The 44-year old man charged with the murder of Det. Garda Horkan in Castlerea on June has again been deemed unfit to appear by video link in court.

Stephen Silver of Aughaward, Foxford, Co Mayo, is continuing to receive treatment at the Central Mental Hospital.

Judge Deirdre Gearty said that she had received correspondence from Professor Damian Mohan, a consultant psychiatrist at the Central Mental Hospital (CMH), stating that the accused was unfit to appear

It is the tenth time Silver has deemed unfit to appear by video link at Harristown District Court, which is located beside Castlerea Prison in Roscommon.

Defence solicitor, Ciaran Smyth of Gearoid Geraghty & Co. Solicitors, said he was anxious to see some progress in the case.

Sgt Mark Mahon said that the file is with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and they anticipate developments soon.

His application that Silver be remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on November 6 was granted by Judge Gearty.
