A group set up to oppose a planned wind turbine in Granard are welcoming a decision by An Bord Pleanala this week to refuse permission for the structure.
A planning application was lodged by Kiernan Milling to erect the turbine as part of an ongoing expansion at its site outside the town.
The local group said the 169 metre turbine was excessive and would impact negatively on the Granard Motte and the planned Norman village project.
Longford County Council refused permission last autumn but the company had appealed the decision to the planning appeals board.
In its ruling issued this week , An Bord Pleanala says it believes the turbine would seriously injure and interfere with the visual setting of Granard Motte which is a protected monument.
It also says the development would endanger public safety because of the additional traffic movement generated on a regional road.
Patrick McGivney from the local opposition group says they hope this will be the end of the process
