Many residents feel the plan would ruin the town.

Deputy Claire Kerrane says the planning permission granted for the project can be changed by Roscommon County Council.

Hundreds of local people turned out to show their support on The Square, along with groups from Strokestown and Boyle. 

Over 520 submissions were made to Roscommon County Council in response to the plans but the local authority says the works are a once in a lifetime transformational opportunity.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 19 sample counts, including using false instruments, inducing landlords to rent properties to him and possession of the proceeds of crime.

The Council has confirmed the works will result in the loss of around 47 parking spaces in the town centre.

Kevin Doran was appointed by Pope Francis as bishop of the diocese in February.

Over 40 people attended a protest this morning against ongoing public realm works on the town square.
