It now leaves Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys and Independent Catherine Connolly as the only candidates left in the running.

The GAA legend pulled out of the race last weekend after he emerged he owed a tenant more than €3,000, dating back to 2009. 

In a statement, Gavin said he "made a mistake" and is now "taking steps to address the matter".

It follows Jim Gavin's decision to withdraw from the Presidential race.

A collective decision will be made as to whether to support either Heather Humphreys or Catherine Connolly.

Fianna Fáil politicians in the Shannonside region have been reacting to the news.

In a statement the former Dublin GAA manager says he's withdrawing with immediate effect after recent days gave him cause to reflect.
