Roscommon produced a remarkable second-half comeback to snatch a dramatic one-point victory over Galway in Salthill.
Galway controlled periods of the opening period, making full use of the wind advantage and racking up an impressive tally from play.
Matthew Tierney opened their account before Rob Finnerty, Shane McGrath and captain Seán Kelly all found their range. Two-pointers proved crucial as Galway stretched their lead, with Tierney and others capitalising from distance.
At the other end, Daire Cregg kept Roscommon in touch with a series of well-taken points. Whereas, Diarmuid Murtagh also chipped in.
However, Galway led 16-points to five at half-time, with Roscommon facing a mountain to climb.
The introduction of greater urgency after the restart immediately lifted Roscommon. Cregg continued to impress, while Murtagh struck a vital two-pointer to begin reducing the deficit.
The turning point arrived in the 47th minute when Enda Smith blasted to the net, giving the visitors real belief. Suddenly the gap was down to single digits and momentum had firmly shifted.
Moments later, Daire Cregg was again involved as Diarmuid Murtagh fired over a two-pointer. Cregg added a point three minutes before time.
Aaron Brady floated over a 45 to bring Roscommon within striking distance before the sides were level entering the final minutes.
In a frantic closing spell, Galway edged ahead only for Roscommon to respond. With just seconds remaining, Ciaran Lennon held his nerve to split the posts and put the Rossies in front.
There was barely time for the restart before the hooter sounded and the Rossies celebrated winning out 2-16 to 21 points.
