Two late goals weren’t enough for Longford as a consistent Sligo clinched the division four title.
Reuben Murray, Sean Tiernan and Dan Crossan all hit point for Longford inside the opening 10 minutes as the visitors started on the front foot.
Sligo took control in the 15 minutes that followed with points from Gerard O’Kelly Lynch, Andrew Kilcullen and Thomas Cawley. O’Kelly Lynch found the back of the Longford net on 26 minutes.
Longford finished the half stronger with two points from Martin Farrell either side of a Cathal Mullane goal on 30 minutes.
Sligo held a slender two point lead at half-time, 1-7 to 1-5.
Michael Mulcahy got Longford off to a dream start in the second-half with an early goal. Reuben Murray and Ronan Courtney both registered points to draw Longford level on 40 minutes.
Andrew Kilcullen got Sligo’s second goal of the afternoon on 47 minutes, before the full-forward hit three points putting Sligo in control of the decider with a nine point lead approaching 70 minutes.
Two late goals from Michael Mulcahy and Reuben Murray brought it back to a three point game. However, the clock was against Longford as they fell just short.
