Ireland is set to get its first cycling velodrome as Sport Ireland announced its masterplan for the sports campus in Dublin.
Having opened its door with the National aquatic centre, sports campus Ireland is now home to a number of sport venues.
The national indoor athletics and gymnastic centres were opened in 2017. While the FAI have located all Irish international team training to the campus.
The national cross country venue opened in 2016, hosting the 2021 European Cross Country championships. However the venue has held just 11 races since opening.
“The first high-level project for delivery under the new masterplan is likely to be the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre”.
A planning application for the project was lodged with Fingal County Council by Sport Ireland in August and a decision is expected in the coming weeks” said Sport Ireland.
“The Sport Ireland Campus masterplan will be realised through a capital development programme over the next 15–20 years.” Announced Sport Ireland today.
“It is envisaged that individual building and infrastructure projects will be delivered in a series of phases over the life cycle of the masterplan.
“The detailed phasing and programming of the delivery will be determined by the needs of the athletes and the growth of sport in Ireland”.
There will also be particular focus on improving public transport links to the Sport Ireland Campus and a strong commitment to sustainability.
As part of the project new athlete accommodation and sports recreation facilities will also be developed.
