A nine point defeat to Monaghan in Clones, brought an end to Roscommon’s championship campaign.
Monaghan winning out 1-20 to 14-points to make the All-Ireland third round.
Diarmuid Murtagh opened the scoring for Roscommon with two minutes played.
Dessie Ward opened Monaghan’s account before Dylan Ruane and Stephen Mooney traded scores for both sides.
Roscommon hit the next four scores. Daire Cregg landing three on the bounce before Diarmuid Murtagh registered his second of the day with 22 minutes played.
Jack McCarron ended a nine minute scoring draught for the hosts with a trademark two-pointer bringing Monaghan back within two. Roscommon leading 0-6 to 0-4.
McCarron and Conor McCarthy both landed a point drawing the side’s level on 28 minutes. However, Stephen Mooney hit the back of the Roscommon net, putting the hosts into a three point lead.
Darragh Heneghan replied for Roscommon with a point on the half-hour. However, it was the hosts who finished the half stronger.
Another Conor McCarthy point before Jack McCarron got his second two pointer of the afternoon. Monaghan took a five point lead to the break, 1-09 to 0-07.
Monaghan fight back
Roscommon broke from the traps early in the second-half. A Diarmuid Murtagh, two pointer on 37 minutes, followed by a Dylan Ruane point on 40 minutes, as Roscommon moved back within two points.
Monaghan responded strongly to the fast Roscommon start with three unanswered points coming through Michael Bannigan, Dessie Ward and Michael McCarville inside five minutes. The Farney retook a five point lead on 46 minutes.
Oisin McGorman and Dessie Ward kept Monaghan’s scoreboard ticking over as Dylan Ruane and Jack Duggan both kicked points for Roscommon who were looking to find a way back into the contest.
Monaghan kicked another three unanswered points through Dessie Ward, Conor McCarthy and Jack McCarron. The farney they moved into a seven point lead after 64 minutes.
Roscommon substitutes Cian McKeon and Conor Hand both kicked scores in the final five minutes. However, it was Monaghan who finished the stronger with another triplet of unanswered points.
Jack McCarron, David Garland and Ryan McAnespie sealed the win for Monaghan as they were all on target in the closing stages in Clones, as Monaghan ran out nine point winners.
Monaghan are in Mondays draw for Round Three of the All Ireland Championship, as Roscommon’s year ends with provincial honours to show for their efforts.
It finished in St Tiernachs Park, Clones, Monaghan 1-20 to Roscommon’s 0-14.
