Elphin overcome spirited North Roscommon side

Elphin book quarter-final spot

Elphin had nine points to spare in this afternoon's clash played in Boyle to advance to the Roscommon quarter-finals outright.

North Roscommon made life difficult holding Elphin scoreless for 12 minutes at one stage in the contest.

Elphin started strongly with points from Evan Gunn and John Finnerty as they led by three points after six minutes.

North Roscommon were up and running when Adam Dwyer scored two points inside a minute and a half. Elphin registered two points in response, through Evan Gunn and Nessan Lenehan.

John Finnerty found the back of the North Roscommon net having being set-up by Aidan Murray to finish past Alan Carlos. Two further points from Finnerty and Cathal Enright extended the Elphin lead to seven.

North Roscommon finished the half stronger of the sides, scoring three unanswered points through Eoghan Diffley, Cian Quinn and Evan Corcoran.

At half-time Elphin led by four points, 1-7 to 0-6.

Elphin stronger as the game went on

Elphin hit four unanswered points at the beginning of the second-half, through Aaron Brady, Cathal Enright and Shane Killoran.

Evan Corcoran got a much-needed score for North Roscommon, before John Finnerty got his second goal of the contest. Elphin now led by nine points with 38 minutes played.

Elphin extended their lead with points from Gerry Cregg, John Finnerty and Fintan Cregg. North Roscommon responded in similar fashion as they hit three unanswered scores.

A two-pointer from Liam Killoran; along with points from Adam Dwyer and Evan Corcoran saw North Roscommon ask questions of the Elphin defence.

Elphin took full control of the contest and secured the result with five points on the spin from Aaron Brady, Fintan Cregg and John Finnerty inside the final seven minutes of regulation time.

Evan Corcoran who was causing the Elphin defence problems all afternoon, scored two points in the final moments of the contest for North Roscommon.

Elphin running out nine-point winners on a scoreline of 2-20 to 1-14.
