Alex Dunne’s Formula 2 campaign continued at the Red Bull Ring in Austria over the weekend, as he held on to fourth place in the championship, following a fourth and sixth place finish in the sprint and feature races in Styria respectively. Dunne, who came into the weekend on the back of a successful outing in Barcelona, finished fourth in Saturday’s sprint race, coming in behind Rafael Villagomez, Sebastian Montoya, and winner John Bennett, and in the feature race, led during the initial stages, but the Offaly native couldn’t sustain his challenge, eventually finishing seventh on track. However, he was promoted to sixth a few hours after the race ended, after officials elected to penalise Dunne’s teammate at Rodin Motorsport, Martinius Stenshorne, for making his mandatory pit stop under Virtual Safety Car conditions, which is not permitted in the rulebook, promoting Dunne to sixth place.
The weekend’s results leave Dunne in fourth place in the overall championship standings, 28 points behind Gabriele Mini, who himself leads the race to be crowned F2 champion by 2 points after a good weekend; he finished second in yesterday’s feature race. Formula 2 is back in action this weekend, at the home of motorsport in Silverstone, for the British Grand Prix, a race where Dunne finished in second in the feature race last season, on his way to fifth in the championship.
