Today marks the 100th anniversary of the burning of the town of Granard during the War of Independence.
Up to 15 large houses and business premises on Main Street were destroyed in the fires which were started by a convoy of Black and Tans and Lancers in reprisal for the shooting dead of a senior RIC officer in the Greville Arms Hotel a few days earlier.
Local historian Sean O' Suilleabhain says the attack on the town was widely anticipated and many people had fled the area shortly after the shooting in the local hotel.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning he explained how the attack had happened a couple of days later than thought, at a time when Sean Mac Eoin had had to divide his forces to try to defend Granard and Ballinalee.
