The church is one of the most historic sites in County Roscommon

Roscommon County Council has published a tender for significant repair works to be carried out at the historic ruined church in Rahara.

Earlier this year the historic site was granted 60,000 under the Community Monuments Fund for the project.

The church as it stands at present is in a poor condition, with threes stone walls in various stages of ruin.

According to the tender published this week by Roscommon County Council, works will include consolidation of the north-east corner of the ruin, where there is a significant crack and missing masonry

The east gable, which is leaning outwards on its (east) outer face, is to be consolidated and Ivy removal and consolidation of the masonry is to be carried out at the north-west corner of the ruin

Conservation and restoration of the cut stone arch on the north wall will also take place and the haunch along the top of the wall on all three sides of the ruin is to be consolidated.

A new curved haunch is to be formed along the top of the wall, to comprise stone rubble set into a lime bedding mortar.

A bat survey has also been undertaken which shows signs of the protected species at the Rahara church site but the works are expected not to have any impact of the mammals.

For interested parties, the response deadline is the 27th of this month.
