A proposal to reduce speed limits in urban areas will go out to public consultation later this year.
There are plans to limit speeds to 30km per hour in local towns and around village schools.
It's part of a nationwide speed reduction strategy.
Towns such as Roscommon, Castlerea, Longford, Ballymahon and Carrick-on-Shannon will be affected.
