Schoolchildren across the county of Roscommon will plant 7,500 native trees this autumn as part of an eco-initiative to help protect local water sources, enhance biodiversity and capture carbon.

The ''I’ve planted a tree, and my garden is pesticide free'' initiative is part of an overall pilot water source protection programme being managed by the National Federation of Group Water Schemes.

The initiative is being launched as part of Rural Water Week, and is supported by the County Council with the support of developer Sean Mulryan of Ballymore, and Irish children’s charity,Variety Ireland.

After participating in an educational programme on biodiversity, national schools children will be given a native Irish species such as Rowan Hawthorn, Hazel or Birch, to plant at home.
