Michael Treacy believes motorists who park in designated spaces should receive three penalty points and a one-month driving ban.

A Roscommon disability rights advocate believes harsher sanctions are needed to tackle the abuse of mobility parking bays.

A suite of new road safety fines have been introduced today which includes a fixed-charge notice of 200 euro for the misuse of a disabled parking permit.

However, Michael Treacy believes motorists who park in designated spaces should receive three penalty points and a one-month driving ban.

He's branded the new fine as a revenue generator for Government.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show the Roscommon native says the authorities must now enforce the new sanctions to ensure they are effective.

"Enforcement is the whole secret. To get the Gardaí and the authorities to enforce it, it's very difficult and the disabled spaces are being abused every day. I really think they need 2 to 3 penalty points and to be put off the road for a month if you're caught in a disabled space. The deterrent would be the penalty points and one month off the road, not the money".
