Roscommon County Council has agreed to prepare a design for a footpath on the road between the Golf Links road and the Athlone road.
There are a number of housing estates on the road and it is part of one of the town's five kilometre walking routes.
Local councillor Marty McDermott has asked the local authority to provide safer access for pedestrians with a footpath along the entire road.

He says while it may have to go on a list to receive funding, preparing a design and associated costings is at least the first step.
