Older and vulnerable people across Leitrim are being given rechargeable torches as part of the Light Up/Keep Well campaign.

The project is a joint initiative between the Community Policing Unit in the county and the local council.

While the council is running the Keep Well campaign as part of a nationwide response to the Covid pandemic, the gardai are incorporating their annual Lock Up Light Up security awareness advice.

Sergeant Orla Mc Grath from the Community Policing Unit in Leitrim says one very basic piece of advice for householders is to keep the backdoor locked.

She says so-called "distraction thefts" work for some criminals simply because people tend to leave the back doors unsecured.
