The pesticide MCPA has been detected in the Longford Central Public Water Supply by Irish Water.
The detection was made in July of this year following number of similar detections in the supply in April and May of 2019.
Irish Water says that while the pesticide levels detected in the supply don't pose any immediate risk to health, it's very important that users of pesticides use best practice when spraying their lands.
Longford Central is one of six priority catchment areas of particular concern where exceedances of pesticides are persistent.
The pesticide MCPA detected in the Longford supply is most commonly used to kill rushes on wet land.
The regulations are very stringent and a single drop of pesticide is enough to breach the drinking water limit in a small stream for up to 30 kilometres.
