Boat users on the Shannon are being reminded that passage through Tarmonbarry lock on the Longford/Roscommon border won't be possible from next Monday.

Boat users on the Shannon are being reminded that passage through Tarmonbarry lock on the Longford/Roscommon border won't be possible from next Monday.

The lock will be closed from next Monday till the end of April to allow for emergency repair works to be carried out on a lock gate.

An alternative route via the Camlin River will be available during the works, subject to Government Coivd-19 restrictions.

Boat owners who may opt for that route are being warned to check their airdraft prior to the journey due to the low bridge on the N5 road.

It's understood substantial wear has appeared on one of the gates in recent months and there are fears it could collapse into the lock.

The gates there are also used to manage water levels on the Shannon.
