There have been over 30 deer-related claims to an Irish insurance company in past five years in the Shannonside region. According to FBD insurance, it has recorded 36 deer-related claims since 2021. A meeting of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture and Food heard about the company's experience when it comes to the "practical risks" of deer management. Claims associated with deer have increased over recent years - it hit 99 claims in 2024, and so far this year 33 claims have been recorded.
Locally, 15 claims have been made in Roscommon between 2021 and 2026. There have been 10 in Leitrim while three have been made in Longford. According to FBD, certain counties are more likely than others to submit these claims - and these generally reflect where deer populations are highest. Kerry, Cork, Galway, Tipperary and Wicklow top the list where the most deer-related claims originate.
