A north Longford Councillor is calling on TDs to put more pressure on the government to consider easing restrictions on sales at marts.
Councillor Turlough McGovern is speaking at Minister Charlie McConalogue today confirmed the level of activity at agricultural marts has decreased by 16 per cent during level 5 restrictions.
Marts have only been allowed to operate sales online since October 20th.
The Agriculture Minister says the cattle throughput came to over 36,000 head in the first five days of the new system, compared to just under 43,000 in the same period last year.
Councillor McGovern says that marts were operating well with restrictions when they re-opened in July and had no cases of transmission of the virus.
He says the current system is hugely unfair on buyers and sellers.
