New equine rehabilitation centre at Castlerea Prison set to help abused horses recover

A new equine rehabilitation centre at Castlerea Prison in Roscommon will help abused and rescued horses recover.

The new stable unit at the Roscommon prison is part of a programme teaching inmates specialist skills in the care of horses.

The course, supported by the Irish horse racing industry has sourced a number of animals from the Irish Horse Welfare trust.

The horses will be used as part of the training programme before being rotated out to new homes or other rescues.

Former RTE racing correspondent Robert Hall says this programme will help educate communities in the proper care of the animals:
