Cian McPhillips set a new European Under-20 record as he finished fourth in his 800m semi-final at the European indoor championships.
McPhillips 1:48.06 to finish in fourth place, a race won by Mateusz Borowski of Poland in 1:45.79 with Britain’s Jamie Webb second in 1:45.99, both qualify for tomorrow’s final.
18-year-old McPhillips looked totally at home in the European championship, letting the pace go early on and running his own race to break the European under-20 record.
There was disappointment for Mark English in his semi-final as he finished in fourth place in 1:48.99, the race was won by former World champion France’s Pierre-Ambroise Bosse in 1:47.66 with Poland’s Adam Kszczot second in 1:47.98.
Belgium’s Eliot Crestan took third place in 1:48.12 ahead of English. English was never in the mix for a place in the final.
Elsewhere Nadia Power bowed out of the women’s 800m after making a move a bit too early in her 800m semi-final.
Power made a move for home with two laps to go before being pulled back in and clocking 2:04.04. Poland’s Angelika Cichocka won out in 2:03.18, with Ellie Baker second in 2:03.29, both made the final.
