Man accused of murdering Dublin teen named after court order expires

A man accused of murdering a teenager in Dublin last week can now be named after a order prohibiting his identification after his first appearance

A man accused of murdering a teenager in Dublin last week can now be named after a order prohibiting his identification after his first appearance in court expired today.

George Gonzaga Bento, who used to live at East Wall in Dublin, was brought to court on Saturday and has yet to make an application for bail.

Section 252 of the Children Act prohibits the identification of child victims in court proceedings. It also applies in cases where the child is dead.

Last week, the mother of a boy murdered by his uncle pleaded for changes to the law to be fast-tracked so she can tell the world about her son.

When George Gonzaga Bento appeared before Judge John Campbell on Saturday, the media were reminded of their obligations not to name or reveal anything that might lead to the identification of the teenage victim in this case.

He also made an order protecting the identity of Mr Bento, which ran out today.

Judge Campbell said he was of the view that naming him could give way to identifying the victim, but Judge Victor Blake was today told they didn’t know each other, and the barrister representing a number of media outlets said the order was “made in error”.

There was no application to renew the order today so Mr Bento can now be named. He was remanded in further custody today and is due back in court next month.
