A Longford senator believes that supporting post offices could help encourage more people to live and work in rural towns and villages .
Communities across the Shannonside Northern Sound region are coming to terms with the loss of over ten Bank of Ireland branches following the company's announcement this week.
Senator Micheal Carrigy runs the post office in Ballinalee, and believes that a form of tax breaks may be required to encourage people to move away from larger urban centres into the countryside.
However, he warns that unless post offices are given more support, as the key financial institution now in many rural areas due to the loss of physical bank buildings, the economy will suffer.
