Longford garda Superintendent Jim Delaney is welcoming the inclusion of the county town as one of the pilot Local Community Safety Partnerships around the country.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee announced today that the two-year projects are being rolled out in Dublin's north Inner City, Waterford and Longford.
The location of the pilots were chosen based on factors including population density, crime rates and deprivation.
Superintendent Delaney says a lot of work has already begun between the gardai and other agencies in Longford and this programme will put that on a broader footing.
While the programmes don't mention any increase in garda resources, the Longford Superintendent says the pilot will be a useful learning tool about what is and isn't working.
