Local teen wins Garda Youth Award for running Leitrim D&D group

While it was created in the 1970s, D&D has become more prominent in recent years, featuring in popular TV shows such as Stranger Things and The Big Bang Theory.

A Leitrim Teenager has been recogised for her efforts in bringing young people together through a local youth cafe.

Amy Van Der Merwe received the award from Sligo Leitrim Gardaí for her work in planning, organising and running a Dungeons and Dragons group for teens in Carrick on Shannon through the Breffini Youth Cafe.

D&D is a tabletop role-playing game where players collaborate to tell a story, battle monsters and complete quests.

While it was created in the 1970s, the game has become more prominent in recent years, featuring in popular TV shows such as Stranger Things and The Big Bang Theory.

Amy will now go to the national Garda Youth awards representing Leitrim along with other local winners.
