Local student Shane says the stereotype of young people not caring about politics doesn't apply anymore.

Local students are supporting a newly introduced bill that calls for the voting age to be reduced to 16.

Donegal TD Thomas Pringle introduced the bill in the Dail this week.

For general or European elections, the constitution would have to be changed via referendum for the voting age to be lowered.

However in the case of local elections, a change of legislation is all that's required.

Deputy Pringle is calling for the referendum to be held alongside the 2024 Local and European Elections.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, 16 year old Roscommon student Shane Early says he and his classmates would welcome the chance to make their voice heard.

He dismissed arguments that 16 years olds have no interest in politics:
