These new figures reveal that Leitrim is the cheapest county in Ireland to rent in the country.

The latest report compiled by Daft.ie into the current home rental market in Ireland, shows rents across the Shannonside Northern Sound region have increased by 20% compared to the same period last year.

The new figures compiled by a Trinity College economist for the property website, shows rents increased by 10.7% nationally, meaning tenants in Roscommon, Cavan, Leitrim, Longford and Monaghan are experiencing double the increase of those in other areas across the country.

These new figures reveal that Leitrim is the cheapest county in Ireland to rent in the country at an average rent of €1,014 which is up 20.2% on last year.

That's closely followed by the likes of Donegal, Longford and Monaghan.

Co Longford has an average home rental rate of €1.172 per month which was also up 20.2% when compared this time last year.

Monaghan remains the fourth cheapest place to rent in the country with the average amount paid to landlords standing at €1,173 per month, up 19.6%.

And, according to the report published today, the average rent in Roscommon currently stands at €1,203 which is up 22.8%.

Co Cavan has the highest average monthly rent being paid by tenants across the region at €1,221 which is a rise of 21.3%, over the last 12 months.

The report attributes the extraordinary shortage of rental accommodation to the recent rent increases.
