A local primary school is awaiting a decision from the Department of Education and Youth regarding a proposed amalgamation with another school.
Scoil Mhuire, Drumboylan has educated local children for the past 76 years.
Over the weekend, it emerged that the school will close its doors.
It is the second primary school closure in county Roscommon in recent weeks following the announcement of Slatta National School.
In a statement to Shannonside FM, with rural decline, Scoil Mhuire say enrolment numbers have reduced to the point that the school is no longer sustainable.
They say that it is "extremely sad for the community and indeed a huge blow to the area."
The statement continues by saying they "hope that past pupils, staff and parents have fond memories of their time" in the school.
In concludes by saying the school is awaiting a decision from the Department with regards to an amalgamation with another school in the parish.
