Leitrim's county vet believes legislation will need to be introduced in DNA testing to identify the owners of dogs who don't clean up after their pets can be introduced.

A lengthy debate about increased reports of dog fouling at walks and amenities in the county took place at the March meeting of Leitrim County Council this week.

The debate began after a motion from Councillor Thomas Mulligan suggested that all dog walkers should carry poop scoopers to clean up after their pets to prevent unwanted fouling on paths and walkways
