Edwina Guckian, who is behind the 'Sowing the Seed' project, says the interest in creating the traditional costumes has been so high, that they've had to buy in straw to keep up.

A Leitrim woman is encouraging people to get involved in the tradition of 'mumming'.

Mumming is an Irish tradition of dressing in disguise and visiting homes within the community during the twelve days of Christmas.

If a 'mummer' is invited into a home, the homeowners must guess the identity of the person before offering them food and drink.

Edwina Guckian, who is behind the 'Sowing the Seed' project, says the interest in creating the traditional costumes has been high.

Most of the costumers and hats have been made using the straw grown as part of the ' Sowing the Seed' project but the demand for involvement has been such that they've had to buy in straw as well.

"We had a workshop in Carrick-On-Shannon on Wednesday and we had over 60 people and they were from all different parts of Ireland that had moved to Leitrim, and we had loads of Ukrainians so it was really special. So the idea is that we ask people to form their own groups to go out in their communities this Christmas, any day at all for an hour or two and just call to a few houses on your road. You don't have to be a professional musician, singer or dancer . You could go out and sing a few carols to some people. Don't leave it to the kids to do it!"
