The petition has been launched this week.

A Leitrim principal is renewing her call for the Department of Education to provide a new school building in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Caroline Healy says Scoil Mhuire which is located across two campuses is no longer fit for purpose.

A technical report carried out by the Department over a year ago found a number of areas of improvement with the sanctioning of roof repairs and the approval of two pre-fabs granted.

However, the local principal says this does not solve the problem and a heightened campaign has now begun with the start of online petition.

Almost 350 people have signed their name to the campaign in recent hours.

Speaking to Shannonside FM Caroline stated over 500 students are now enrolled in the school however the conditions are unacceptable.

''Since the amalgamation in 2013 we're on two campuses, and physically that's a huge problem, parents have two drop off points, under extreme traffic conditions. Many of the classrooms are sub-standard , the staff room isn't big enough and we had serious problems with mould and damp. Scoil Mhuire needs a new school now, it's not acceptable that children are being educated in really such dire conditions in 2023, we need better than this.''
