An offer of compensation of €12,000 to a girl who suffered stress and bedwetting following a road crash almost three years ago has been rejected by Leitrim Circuit Court as not sufficient.
The girl, who was four at the time, was injured when the car she was a back seat passenger in rear ended another vehicle at traffic lights.
A number of medical reports were presented before Judge John Alymer on the nature of injuries sustained by the girl following the crash in December 2017.
The girl complained of neck pain when she got home after the crash and was given Calpol by her parents.
Two days later the pain had not subsided and she was taken to hospital where a doctor assessed she had pulled tissues in her neck.
Subsequently, her parents then reported that she had become unsettled and experienced several episodes of bedwetting.
A report completed a number of months after the crash suggested that the girl's neck injury had healed but the nervousness did not and when travelling in cars she would close her eyes when other vehicles would approach and it was suggested she had sustained nervous shock.
The court heard that the offer of €12,000 was on the lower end of the scale for this type of injury and Judge John Alymer said that he would prefer an offer closer to 20, 000 euro or at least 18, 000 euro and the matter was adjourned for discussions between the relevant parties.
