The European Indoor athletics championships get underway in Torun, Poland this evening, a day earlier than scheduled due to such a high number of entrants.

Irish interest begins at 6:30 with Michelle Finn in heat one of the 3,000 metres. Andrew Coscoran goes in heat two of the 1500 metres at 7:30 with Luke McCann to follow in heat three and Paul Robinson in heat four.

Longford’s Cian McPhillips gets his European indoor championship campaign underway on Friday night in the heat three of the 800 metres.

Two members of the original panel have both withdrawn from the championships, 2019 bronze medallist Ciara Mageean withdraw on Monday.

Cork’s Darragh McElhinney has withdrawn following a positive covid-19 test on arrival in Poland. Brian Fay of Raheny Shamrock has been called up in his place.
