A Leitrim councillor says there's hope of some lasting improvement in beef prices for some farmers if a new application for special status for grass fed beef is approved.
Under EU quality schemes a PGI, or "Protected Geographical Indication" label allows consumers to trust the quality of the product, while also helping producers.
Councillor Brendan Barry says the committee which would decide on what beef could use the PGI label would have strong representation from farm organisations.
He says if approval is given for use of the special status, farmers would have a real say in what prices they could command for their product.
