A housing estate in Granard remains sealed off this afternoon following the discovery of a suspicious device.

This incident began just after 11 am when Gardai in Granard received a call that a suspicious device was found in the front garden of a home in Tromra Road.

The housing estate was subsequently sealed off with some residents told to relocate temporarily.

The Defence Forces EOD unit, based at Custume Barracks in Athlone, arrived at the scene shortly after 1pm.

They have deployed a special robot to assess the device, with a specialist in full explosive protective clothing also examining the scene.

The entrance to the Tromra Road remains closed as investigations continue.
