A new midlands company has conducted a study into single-use plastic packaging waste generated across Longford as part of efforts to target reductions in certain areas.
The study has been conducted by CUSP, standing for Cease Using Single Use Plastic which is based in Roscommon town.
It's study showed that Longford households generate a combined 2,400 tonnes of single-use plastic waste each year and that is enough to fill 53 Olympic size swimming pools.
The company was established in 2018 to develop solutions to the issue and distil the huge amounts down into bite-sized reduction targets that people can more easily relate to.
It's latest study shows Longford town generating 513 tonnes of single-use plastic waste each year, Edgeworthstown on 122 tonnes per year, and 110 tonnes annually in Ballymahon.
Simon Ruddy from the company says they want householders to download a free CUSP app they've designed and use that to help track their useage of single-use plastic items.
